Epic Games Is In The Process OF Acquiring Rocket League Developer Psyonix
Epic Games is in the process of acquiring Rocket League developer Psyonix, the companies announced today with an acquisition expected to close in late May or early June.. In a FAQ, the studio sought to reassure current Rocket League fans that nothing will change about their day-to-day enjoyment of the popular game.

In a tweet, Psyonix said that "anyone who owns Rocket League through Steam can still play it and can look forward to continued support."
This doesn't mean Rocket League is leaving Steam, where its entire PC playerbase currently lives. In the short term, the studio says, nothing about the game will change and is still moving ahead with its update roadmap and plans to continue "for as long as you'll have us."

In the long-term, Psyonix says it does plan to bring the game to the Epic Games store, and to use the leverage granted by this acquisition to "grow the game in ways we couldn't do on our own before."The wording there suggests that, at some point, newcomers to Rocket League will have to buy it through the Epic Store, but us Steam folk can stay put.

Psyonix states in a Q&A on the Rocket League website, that the gameplay won't be changing but that the new ownership should bolster the competitive scene with new resources for esports events.

Rocket League has sustained its success partially on loot boxes, the practice of which recently came under scrutiny. As a result Psyonix had to pull the transactions from a couple of countries. This deal isn't quite settled yet, but all that's left are formalities, it sounds like. "Epic and Psyonix currently expect to close the acquisition at the end of May or early June 2019.
