Netflix announced a new cartoon series : The Cuphead Show! with developer Studio MDHR's Chad and Jared Moldenhauer serving as executive producers. The show is expected to "expand on the characters and world of Cuphead, with animation style inspired by the classic Fleischer cartoons from the 1930s," according to the press release.

Developer Studio MDHR announced the news on its Twitter account this morning. The show is currently in development stage at Netflix, and it’s being handled by the company’s in-house animation team, according to Studio MDHR’s tweet. Cuphead was inspired by Fleischer and Disney cartoons from the '30s, so an animated series isn't much of a leap.

The developer also suggested that fans will “witness the wondrous Inkwell Isles as you’ve never seen them before in an original series inspired by classic animation styles of the 1930s.” The series will feature the same hand-drawn, and also expand on its canonical lore in order to tell larger stories that fit with the game’s somewhat mature tone.

No release date has been announced for The Cuphead Show! Studio MDHR told IGN that the game will not simply be a re-telling of Cuphead. "The game told its story," Cuphead co-creator Jared Moldenhauer told IGN. "The cartoon will tell its [own.]" Chad and Jared Moldenhauer are signed on as the executive producers for Studio MDHR's involvement; CJ Kettler will do the same for King Features. The Cuphead Show! will be produced and drawn by folks over at Netflix Animation, executively produced by Mickey Mouse Shorts' Dave Wasson and Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling's Cosmo Segurson.

"To date, Cuphead™ has sold over 4 million units worldwide, and has won over 20 major awards, including Special Achievement in Animation at the 45th Annual Annie Awards, Xbox One’s Game of the Year, a BAFTA Games award for Music, and a trio of statues at the 2017 Game Awards for Best Debut, Best Independent Game, and Best Art Direction.

This announcement marks the first long-form animated series production for King Features since announcing their strategy to build character franchises across multiple platforms including television, digital video, licensing and social media."
